Our Quattro-equipped Audi A4 two.0T sedan made it through winter mostly unscathed. Adding a set of $1016 Nokian Hakkapeliitta snowfall tires helped enormously in this thing, allowing us to charge through Michigan'southward worst with nary a thought. Which is not to say nary a speeding ticket. This author scared up a five-o on a wintry charge to Chicago and back, and luckily, the peace officer was as merciful as the machine. How fast was I going? Permit's but say there was a stiff possibility that this long-term update might take had a prison dateline.
The betoken here is that the A4 is fun, confident, and stable correct up to the rough edge of its handling limit. It's not quite as linear as its principal contest, the BMW 3-serial—the Audi's steering effort changes dramatically with speed, for example. But for those who prize all-bicycle-drive stability over on-the-edge fluidity, the A4 satisfies.
In that location'due south no apparent fuel penalty for AWD, either. Technical director Dave VanderWerp wrote in the logbook, "Over the weekend, the Audi's trip computer was reporting 28 to 29 mpg for each of my trips. Sure, they were mostly highway (as is nigh driving in the U.S.), but that included many a lusty on-ramp romp. That'due south pretty amazing for an all-wheel-bulldoze car on snow tires."
All was not perfect, still. Our side mirrors were ruthlessly molested by ruffians wilding and carousing in the night. Our dealer replaced both for an heart-watering $1156. Two days later, we took the machine back because the passenger door wouldn't open from the inside. That was fixed under warranty. We weren't charged for the A4's initial 5000-mile service (oil and filter alter plus an inspection), but its second visit to the dealer for the scheduled 15,000-mile checkup, which added a more thorough inspection to the oil and filter change, set up us back $345.
Merely the most troubling issue persists: At depression revs (1500 to 2500 rpm), the engine volition occasionally surge by 100 or so revs. It mostly happens on startup while under load. The always-trusty internet reports a few similar incidents and has diagnosed an engine misfire due to a cleaved catalyst. But in our car, no engine or O2 sensor lights lit up in the cluster, and our dealership reports no bad OBD codes. We are still mystified merely volition take it looked at when the A4 returns to the dealership for the scheduled 25,000-mile maintenance visit.

Even after the Audi A4 ii.0T's middling finish in our contempo four-vehicle comparison test of entry-level luxury cars, we wanted to spend an extended period of time with it to meet how this constantly evolving emblem of Audi'southward renaissance would fare twelvemonth-circular. We're warming to it.
For how underwhelming the 2.0-liter directly-injection turbo four's output of 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque may be, this car exhibits true poise, comfort, and reassurance in almost whatsoever condition—it'south a little too forepart-heavy to wow us on the rail, though. Initial test numbers don't tell the whole story. It posted a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.iv seconds, one-half a second off the BMW 328i and a total 2nd off the Infiniti G37 Sport nosotros tested dorsum in June. Simply those had six-cylinder engines, whereas the 2.0-liter turbo four but feels like a six. The engine is incredibly polish and linear, provided you continue it to a higher place 1500 rpm. Also, its unremarkable plow on the skidpad (0.87 yard) doesn't requite a clear flick of how much fun this car is to bring to the edge of adhesion.
Starting with a base price of $32,675, we ordered our A4 minus the annoying "side help" that warns the driver that he or she is about to change lanes without indicating. But we did choose the slick 6-speed manual and Quattro all-wheel bulldoze, likewise as the $4000 Premium Plus package (xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats); the $2500 Navigation bundle and rearview camera; and the $1450 Sport bundle with 18-inch wheels, performance prophylactic, sport seats, and the sportier suspension setup. It rang upwards to a non-insignificant $41,100. Just you gets what you pays for.
In this instance, that means a car that'southward gaining on the BMW three-series in terms of remainder, smoothness, and a dual-purpose sport/luxury nature. Some fifty-fifty prefer it to the BMW. "Every bit I get older—irreverence though this may be—I adopt this to the three-series," wrote John Phillips in the automobile'southward logbook. "The Audi's ride is softer, filtering out flinty displacements, but its steering is just equally precise, and so it can exist placed within an inch of where I demand it to be at mid-turn."
For the coming assail that is a Michigan winter, we've fitted the A4 with a set up of Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tires at a whopping $1016. Dry and wet grip take a hitting, just the A4 is certain to be a snow tank in one case the white stuff starts falling and our thoughts turn to suicide. When that happens, the A4 should give us reason enough to live.
